Ste Catherine street is believed to have opened around 1801, or at least having its current name changed in that year. Since then, it has been through over 200 years of evolution, including its shift from a primarily entertainment district, to one of retail and consumer shopping.

One may ask, “What is the current, 2014, identity of this commercial thoroughfare”? Well, the answer we have discovered is that it is a collective of many stores, styles, aesthetics and international influence. One can see from end-to-end that the street depicts what Montreal is made out of: diversity.

In this visual of 20 field-study images, we can note the many different faces of Ste Catherine (both anthropological and architectural) that build its unique identity. The types of people alone that populate this street are many. We have highlighted 3 major ones and outlined why they may have visited Ste Catherine, what their expectations and purposes were, and what would have surprised them.
